Dear Persi
I read your posting about Fr. Sabri. I don’t agree with some of your postings. I was there first had through the entire situation. My entire family was. As a matter of fact, I met my husband at that time.
About eleven years ago Fr. Sabri was doing his mass in St. Thomas Catholic Church
Peacefully. We we’re very happy with him. He was the only Priest that believed in what we believe today (Omta Ashouretah) Not, Caldean. He did not change his mass from Catholic to any other mass nor did he want to join the church of the east. He at all times performed Catholic mass. I am a witness I was in his choir at St. Thomas Catholic Church since I was seven years old. The only thing he did was change a few songs around added omta in them and talked about Omta Ashouretah. The bishops did not like that. They decided that Fr. Sabri for no apparent reason his time was up and it was time for him to go.His followers at that time started questioning this and asked the bishop why his time was up? We started rallying outside of the church and asking for Fr. Sabri to come back. Some of our Sayings were “ We are Atourayeh we are not Caldean, We want Fr. Sabri He believes in Omta Atouretah”. The sayings go on and on. As a matter of fact, we did have a great number of Churches of the east supporters that supported the idea of having our name from caldean catholic to Assyrian catholic. We then rallied every Sunday in front of the church begging and pleading with the bishop. I have videos to prove what happened. I remember one Sunday afternoon we gathered in the church hall asking the bishop to reconsider having Fr. Sabri stay. The bishop agreed for the meantime we were so happy things were going our way. Remember we did not want anyone to leave their church and follow us. We just wanted to be known as Assyrian Roman Catholic. “Papaya”
During the next few weeks after the agreement the bishop changed his mind and already there was a priest waiting to take Fr. Sabri’s place. Fr. Sabri was unaware of this. Fr. Kamal took his place. I have a great deal of respect for Fr. Kamal. He is a good man. He’s been with the church for over twelve years. I’ve been in his choir for over ten years.
We then were back to where we started. We didn’t gain or loose anything but we wanted our priest who believed in our Omta Atouretah. His followers at that time decided to go and rent a church and have our mass somewhere. You see my dear Atourayah, We did not have any supporters at that time if omtanayeh people like yourself supported us we would have an Assyrian Catholic Church. I don’t think we would have those problems today. Caldo-Assyrian and so forth. We moved on and rented a church it was St Francis in Turlock. As a matter of fact I got married to my husband there and a Catholic mass was performed. I joined the choir that consisted of ten girls. We sang Omtanayeh songs and believed in our name (Ashourayah). We were very happy. Our church was called The First United Assyrian Catholic Church. (NO CALDEAN.) We needed more supporters but we didn’t get them. As I mentioned above.
We today at heart are still trying to fight this battle. We want to be Assyrian, Omtanayeh Catholics. We love our religion, we love our Vatican, and we love our Pope. We won’t change. I hope some of the facts were clear to you.
If you ever want to hear a song written by Fr. Sabri. Go to Bet-Nahrain .org click on the event that took place when Mar. Odisho and Mar Givargis were in the event. I sang a song written by him. The title was Ya Paroogan. It talks about Omta Ashouretah how we want God to bless our Omta. If you want to hear more songs from him I can write some of them on the froum. Please don’t compare Sabri to Ashour Soro. Sabri did not want to change anything.
Thanks
God bless our Omta.
God bless Bet-Nahrain
