Embassy of the Republic of Iraq
Washington, D.C. ÓÝÇÑÉ ÌãåæÑíÉ ÇáÚÑÇÞ æÇÔäØäApril 25, 2006
Statement
The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq to the United States has received several complaints from Iraqi citizens of the Assyrian Community about an apparent omission, in a recent speech of the President of Iraq, Mr. Jalal Talabani, of the mention of “Assyrians” whilst enumerating various ethnic groups in Iraq.
The Ambassador regrets this misunderstanding and wishes to take this opportunity to re-affirm the following:
1- The new Iraqi constitution declares in Article (3) that Iraq is a multi-ethnic country. In several other parts, it guarantees recognition of full ethnic rights to all components of Iraqi society.
2- The President as the guardian of the constitution is bound by it and would not possibly aim to undermine it.
3- The omission by the President, which seems to have caused offence, is in all probability unintentional. These things happen and should not be given more significance than they deserve.
4- Assyrians are a recognized and important part of Iraqi society. They are now represented in the new parliament. The new Iraqi Ambassador who has taken up his post in Washington only a week ago, attaches great importance to the Assyrian community and places himself at their disposal and calls upon them to rally around the Embassy and defend the new Iraq, to defeat its enemies: the Saddamists, the chauvinists and the extremists, who are waging a campaign of terror on all its people. Iraqis including the proud Assyrians have lived peacefully together for centuries, and have a future of peace and harmony to build together, and they will surely do so.
