To Nissan,
I don't believe I was educated in an anti-Assyrian anything, I agree that God loved my people, and I don't doubt the verses you brought up.
But the YHWH ashr YHWH thing being I am Ashur I am, there is no biblical evidence that points to that being the meaning, there is nothing in scripture AT ALL that points to YHWH ashr YHW meaning "I am Ashur I am." I mean nothing at all. When you want to grab an important verse like that and pull a meaning out of it, you need to have verses backing up your explanation, otherwise it is a bad interpretation, this is truth with any kind of evidence in the Bible, if YHWH ashr YHWH, I would need to see more evidence from scripture.
It is also true that although God loved the Assyrians and still does, He did not approve of our paganism, one part of being new believers in Christ is acknowledging the past sinful life, the Hebrews acknowledge that Abraham's father was an idol worshipper. God pulled them out of sin, just like He has pulled us out of sin, but we need to acknowledge what was wrong with us in order to say what God changed in us. If we "had" perfect lives, than we wouldn't need God, because God came for the sinner, and all have fallen short of the glory of God, so all are sinners and all need God.
B'shlama,
George
