ACOE, the sleeping giant which was awakened.
The ACOE-Mar B_awai tragic episode, while has created difficulties, financial and organizational damages to ACOE in near term, it has also created a powerful renaissance and a strong awakening among, not only its members-supporters, but also among a lot of the Assyrians who have been inactive or passive in relation to the Assyrian affairs.
The Mar B_awai’s attack on the ACOE leadership, and possibility of breakup and loss of oldest Assyrian institution, has created a strong backlash.
What is interesting is the number of youth and new college graduates who have rediscovered their fading heritage which they were taking for granted until recently.
Most of these graduates who have rediscovered and learned more about their Assyrian identity while studying at universities, have become very interested in the last 2000 years of their history. They are saying that they could not separate the Assyrian history from the history of the COE. They now believe, if COE has always been an Assyrian Church, then why not call it what it has always been: ACOE.
Many of these youth are actively involved in rebuilding the church by raising funds and/or by personal involvement. The new momentum is expected to lift ACOE to a new height, and a new cycle of reconstruction, that will last at least for several generations.
ACOE owes this new renaissance to Mar B_awai
