Recently it has
been brought to our attention that a conspiracy is under way in Iraq to
change the ancient name of our nation in order to divide our people. Some
have proposed that the ancient name of ASSYRIANS be changed to Kaldo-Assyrians
or Assyro-Chaldean. If this conspiracy succeeds, it will be a historic
disaster for the ancient Assyrian community in Iraq
and the world.
The regime change in Iraq and the
recent advances toward democracy in our homeland, under the benevolent leadership
of the American government, are appreciated and supported by the
Assyrians, the indigenous people of the country.
At this crucial
time in the long and glorious history of the Assyrian Nation, certain political
and religious circles of interest have initiated a concerted campaign
to fabricate new names for the Assyrian people.
In the past,
Assyrians have been against several attempts by the criminal regime of Saddam
Hussein to change the name and history of the Assyrian Nation. Saddam Hussein ethnocide policy against the Assyrians
is well documented by the U.S. Department of State and international
human rights organizations. We reject any names and will not support
any attempt to corrupt the holy[1] name of Assyrian.
We confront these
revisionists, on all fronts. The ASSYRIAN (Al-Ashuryeen) name is the
only historical, political, national and God given name for the Assyrians.
We call upon our
Assyrian compatriots, inside and outside of Iraq, to stand against the
newly created self-serving names for our heroic Assyrian nation.
We reject these attempts to change
the history of our people; Saddam Hussein tried to do the
same by following his well-known ethnocide policy against the Assyrians and
failed. We appeal to the American government, and especially to Mr. L. Paul
Bremer III, the American Civil Administrator of Iraq, to be aware of this
conspiracy and to help the Assyrians defend and keep their ancient and historical
name.
